- Compost Organic Waste
Reduce landfill waste by composting food scraps and yard waste instead of throwing them away.
The Department of Public Works offers home composting bins at the subsidized price of $25. Call 781-741-1430 to reserve yours today. Need help getting started with composting? Check out this library of resources available to residents from the DPW and Cleaner Greener Hingham.
Want to try composting but don't have the space for a pile at home? The Town of Hingham has negotiated a preferred rate for Hingham residents with Black Earth compost. Visit their website to learn more.
- Store Recyclables Properly
Keep recyclables separate from trash and store them in a dry, clean place until collection. Abide by all signage at the Transfer Station to be sure to place recyclables in the right area.
- Frosted Plastic Is Valuable!
The Town of Hingham now separates frosted plastic (milk and water jugs) from other types of plastic. This plastic is sold at a higher rate and is earning the Town money to put towards its recycling and waste disposal services. Do your part by putting frosted plastic in the dedicated areas. Thank you!
- Choose Used or Recycled Products
Help reduce waste by choosing used whenever you want to add an item to your household. Facebook groups like Buy Nothing Hingham and Hull and Buy Nothing South Shore offer lots of gently used or like new options. And, remember to always check the revamped Swap Shop at the Hingham Transfer Station! When you do need to buy new, support the recycling industry by purchasing products made from recycled materials.
