[ARCHIVED] Historical Commission Tranquility Grove Project Update

Hingham Town Seal

Residents are invited to attend a Zoom meeting of the Historical Commission on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 7:00 PM where there will be a discussion of the joint application by the Historical Commission and the Conservation Commission to receive Community Preservation Act grant funding for the Tranquility Grove Project.

The Tranquility Grove Project seeks to create a new recreational trail via a boardwalk and pathway from Central Street into Burns Memorial Park, currently accessible from Hersey Street, to a gathering area in the center of the park.

On August 2, 1844, roughly 8,000 people, twice the population of Hingham at the time, showed up for a picnic in Tranquility Grove to protest slavery.  This project seeks to both create a new open space resource and celebrate their historic efforts to abolish slavery.  Research has located Tranquility Grove to the area between Central, Elm, and Hersey Streets.

The project has received three grants from the Greenbush Trust as well as private donations in excess of $60,000. The perimeter of the property and wetlands resources have been surveyed. Landscape Architect Sam Valentine prepared plans for the recreational trail. The Tranquility Grove CPC Application and additional information can be found on the CPC webpage at https://www.hingham-ma.gov/1074/Pending-Applications.

The Historical Commission meeting will be held remotely via Zoom on Monday, November 4 at 7:00 PM.  Dial-in number: 929-205-6099 or Website address: https://zoom.us/join Meeting ID: 818 5116 3030 and Passcode: 134653.
