Department: Hingham Center for Active Living

Overview: The Hingham Center for Active Living (HCAL) is responsible for providing programs, services, information and referrals to residents aged 60+, their caregivers and family members.

The HCAL is a welcoming and fun place where our members can access fitness, health and wellness programs, take educational classes, find volunteer opportunities, attend social events, create new friendships, go out for lunches, and take local or day trips. The HCAL runs an average of 60 programs each month tailored to the varying interests and abilities of our vibrant members.

 Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: Do you have to pay to join?”
Quick Answer: Joining is free. Some of our programs have registration fees.

Question: “Do you have to be a resident of Hingham to join?”
Quick Answer: No. However, we give priority registration to Hingham residents.

Question:How old do you have to be to join?”
Answer: We don’t have an age restriction. We give priority registration to Hingham residents aged 60+. We encourage older adult residents to attend many of our programs and access services. The earlier you take control of how you want to age, the greater the benefits will be for you, your family, and your community. We offer educational seminars and caregiver support for adults. We also have many members who are early retirees who enjoy coming to the center to socialize with others.

Fun Fact: Thirty percent of Hingham’s current population is aged 60+. This will grow to 40% by 2035.

Highlight: Modern-day senior centers, like Hingham Center for Active Living, are breaking the mold on “aging”. Our members are vibrant, energetic, active, and passionate. We are a unique Town department. Our members come in for a morning yoga or barre class and stay with us all day, taking classes, enjoying lunch in the company of others, and expanding their social circle. While we take our jobs very seriously, we are THE fun place to be. Our team goes the extra mile to help you feel included and appreciated. Once you join us, you’ll wish you had come in much sooner!

 What’s New for 2024?

Elder Services is hosting an Open House event on Wednesday, April 3rd from 12:00- 2:00PM. We are inviting the community to celebrate our new name, The Center for Active Living, and the image we represent. We will have entertainment, food, face painting and a photo booth; as well as some nice giveaways. We will unveil our new signage and celebrate “new-aging” in Hingham. This event is the kickoff to our community engagement initiative.

We are inviting community members to volunteer as Brand Ambassadors, representing the Center for Active Living at community events throughout the year. This will be an amazing opportunity for volunteers to interact with Hingham residents and to help us spread the word about the CAL and all our wonderful programs.

We are excited about the work the Senior Center Building Committee is doing to explore upgrading and expanding our existing center or building a standalone facility in Hingham. This project will help us expand the types of programs and services we offer to more residents.

As part of our efforts to make Town Government more accessible to residents, Hingham will spotlight each Town department throughout the year. Our goal is to educate citizens about the inner workings of their local administration and the many responsibilities it holds.
