The Hingham community is rallying together for a blood drive on Wednesday, February 7. This initiative, organized in collaboration with The Red Cross, aims to address the ongoing critical need for blood donations in our local hospitals.
The blood drive will take place at Hingham Center for Active Living (formerly named the Hingham Senior Center) at 224 Central Street, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Residents of Hingham and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate and contribute to this vital cause. The process is simple, and every donation has the potential to save lives.
With the ongoing challenges in the healthcare system, the Hingham community recognizes the importance of coming together to support those in need. By participating in this blood drive, residents can directly impact the lives of patients facing medical emergencies, surgeries, and chronic illnesses.
The blood drive is organized by leadership at Hingham Town Hall. "Our town has always been known for its strong sense of community, and hosting a blood drive is a tangible way for us to make a positive impact on the lives of our neighbors. Each donation can make a significant difference, and we hope to see a robust turnout,” said Tom Mayo, Town Administrator. Currently, The American Red Cross is experiencing an emergency blood shortage with the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years.
For those interested in participating, appointments must be scheduled in advance by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-Red Cross, or using the Red Cross Blood Donor App.
To give blood, donors must 17 years old, in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds. There is no upper age limit for donating, so long as the individual is feeling healthy and well and meets the other criteria, they can donate.
In Massachusetts, a 16-year-old may donate blood but is required to have a consent form signed by a parent or legal guardian before donating. Learn more about eligibility requirements.
